The Opel Blitz, the workhorse of the Wehrmacht, saw service through out World War Two and on all fronts wherever the German Army went. This versatile medium truck was produced in various forms and is mainly remembered as a troop and supply transport, however it also found application as a tanker, mobile workshop, anti-aircraft gun platform and ambulance.
Opel Blitz trucks were llight and middle-weight truck series built and manufactured by the German Opel automobile manufacturer between 1930 and 1975.
Prior to World War II, Opel was Germany’s largest truck producer. The name Blitz was found in a prize competition and was first applied to an Opel Truck in 1930. By 1934, there were four versions offered to the 1 tonne basic model along with fourteen versions of the larger 2 and 2.5 tonnes truck.
In 1939, the Blitz 3.6 three tonne version was used in large numbers by the German Wehrmacht armed forces throughout World War II.
In 1952, Opel presented the basic model in a modern rounded design. In 1960, the 1.9 tonne with 2.6 L engine replaced the previous 1.75 tonne model.
The Opel Blitz B was launched in 1965, and was the end of line of the Blitz trucks. To improve fuel economy, the model was made available in 1.9 litre four cylinder option. The Blitz’s engines were powerful and had a stronger ground construction and de-tuned for more torque and better fuel economy.
In 1968, the launch and strong market of the Mercedes-Benz T2 forced Opel to launch a 2,100 cc Indenor XDP 4.90 diesel engine. It was too late for Opel to regain the lost market.
