Tiger I is the common name of the German heavy tank used in World War II, developed in 1942.
The final official German Designation was Panzerkampfwagen Tiger Ausf.E, often shortened to Tiger.
The Tiger is a German heavy tank of World War Ii that was employed from 1942 in Africa and Europe. Its final designation was Panzer VI Tiger Ausf E. often shortened to Tiger. After August 1944, production of the Tiger I was phased out in your of the Tiger II.
The Tiger I was called an outstanding but still over-engineered design. It used expensive materials and labour-intensive production methods. It was prone to certain types of track failures and breakdowns; it was limited in range by its high fuel consumption. It was expensive to maintain, but generally mechanically reliable.
The tank was given it nickname “Tiger” by Ferdinand Porsche and the Roman numeral was added after the later Tiger II.
Today, only seven Tiger I tanks survive in museums and private collections worldwide. Tiger 131 at the UK’s Tank Museum, which was captured during the North Africa Campaign, is currently the only one restored to running over.
The development of a large tank design started in January 1937. Only one prototype hull was ever built and it was never fitted with a turret.
