In 1942, with the development of large-scale production and the ongoing modernization of T-34-76 tanks, with a view to reducing the labor-intensive production and improving combat qualities, the leading, under the T-34 tank, the design bureau of the plant No. 183 began to develop a new medium-sized project tank T-43.
The T-43 tank project was designed to increase, compared with the T-34 tank, combat survivability, by increasing the thickness of armor sheets of the body and towers, and combat effectiveness, by increasing the size of the combat division, by developing a new, more spacious tower. When developing the project, the level of unification of units and components with a series tank T-34 was 78.5 percent; the configuration and dimensions of the case, mostly remained the same as on the T-34; engine, transmission, chassis elements, gun - the same as on T-34. At the same time, some design developments from the pre-war project of the T-34M tank were implemented in the T-43 project. In particular, due to the increase in the combat mass of the T-43 tank, compared to the T-34 tank, for the first time, a torsion suspension for supporting rollers was implemented for the middle tank.
However, by mid-1943, when it became necessary to install an 85-mm cannon on an average T-43 tank (four variants of the 85-mm cannon were designed for the medium tank to be tested), it turned out that the new T-43 tank was not has a reserve for increasing combat mass for this. Even with its "native" 76-mm cannon, the T-43 tank weighed over 34 tons. A further increase in the mass of this tank led to a decrease in such an important indicator of combat effectiveness as mobility. In addition, the transition of factories to the multi-series production of a new tank would inevitably lead to a decrease in production volumes, which in the wartime conditions were considered inadmissible. In addition, the torsion suspension of support rollers, relatively large diameter, has not yet been sufficiently reliable for the conditions of operation of the medium tank ... Because of this, in the KB plant № 183 decided not to create a new tank, and to modernize the existing T-34 to the final modification.
