The M4A3E8 Sherman earned the nickname "Easy 8" from its experimental designation (E8). This new variant entered into WWII late in the war (Dec 1944). It sported the much vaunted HVSS (horizontal volute spring suspension) wide track and suspension upgrade. This gave the tank a much better ride and more stable firing platform. The M4A3E8 was so successful that it was the used during the post WWII years, in Korea, and even by many other countries during the cold war period.
The M4 Sherman named after American Civil War general “William T. Sherman”. The tank went into production in February 1942. The first factory that delivered the M4 was “Lima Locomotive Works” and A total of 6748 M4s were produced from July 1942 to January 1944.
It is one of the most famous tanks in history. The several variants of M4 Sherman tanks were produced. Shermans were modified by many nations in order to combat the powerful threat posed by German counterparts.
M4A3E8/M4A3(76)W HVSS has a nickname “Easy Eight”. The tank was fitted with the 76mm M1 cannon and Upgraded with widetrack Horizontal Volute Spring Suspension (HVSS) for an easy and smooth drive.
The M4 Sherman had a very long postwar career. They were used well into the 1960s and 1970s mainly in Africa and Latin America. Israel was the largest post-war user of Sherman tanks. In South America, they served as the last fighting Shermans right up until 1989. In some cases, the vehicles were converted for use in other roles from mobile artillery to ambulances.
