Given the designation SdKfz 265, the klPzBefWg was designed from the Ausf A to provide a command vehicle for panzer units. The klPzBefWg also differed in replacing the turret with a built up superstructure, affording more interior room for command equipment and a FuG6 radio in addition to the FuG2. A single MG13 or MG34 in a ball mount on the front of the superstructure was provided, although often removed.

The SdKfz 265 Panzerbefehlswagen was the German Army’s first purpose-designed command tank in service at the beginning of Second World War. The Sd.Kfz. 265 was designed to fulfill a growing need within the German Army for a command tank. On the PzBefw I extra space was created by removing the turret and extending the superstructure upwards, increasing the overall height of the vehicle by 25cm. The extra space was used to house a FuG6 radio transmitter and a third crew member to operate it. Around 190 PzBefw Is were produced between 1935 and 1937 and were used in WW2 from 1939-45 till the end of war.

The SdKfz 265 design showcased a length of 4.4 meters, a width of 2 meters and a height of 1.7 meters. Armor protection ranged from 6mm to 13mm across its various facings. A quarter-elliptical leaf-sprung suspension system allowed for cross-country travel and in keeping up with the rest of the mechanized forces. Operational range reached out to 180 miles and road speeds peaked at 25 miles per hour. Following a 15 mm increase in armor protection (to a total of 28 mm) that was hastily applied to the surfaces of the superstructure as a result of combat experiences in Poland, the Sd.Kfz. 265 command tank was continued to use in the invasions of France and the Netherlands. However, in 1941 many were also shipped across the Mediterranean to participate in the North African Campaign.
