"Jagdpanther" (it. Jagdpanther) - heavy by mass German self-propelled artillery installation (SAU) class tank destroyers of the Second World War.
"Jagdpanther" designed on the basis of the tank "Panther" PzKpfw V Ausf. G and has a layout close to the layout of the Soviet SAU SU-85 (low body perfect configuration). For a heavy car, the Jagdpanther had good speed and maneuverability. On the other hand, the self-propelled gun inherited a number of drawbacks from the base machine, first of all, low mechanical reliability and relatively thin onboard armor.
From October 1943 to April 1945, the MIAG (Braunschweig), MNH (Hannover), MBA (Potsdam) factories produced two prototypes and 425 serial “Yagdpanter”.
According to the departmental rubricator of the German Ministry of Weapons, the self-propelled gun was designated as Sd. Kfz. 173 Panzerjäger V Jagdpanther. From October to November 29, 1943, was called Panzerjäger 8.8 cm auf Panther I.
On August 3, 1942, the Wehrmacht’s weapons control decided to use the Panther tank base to install the newly created powerful 88-mm Pak 43 anti-tank cannon: the options for this gun for the SAU were Stu.K. 43, but were later renamed, Pak. 43/3 (L / 71). Initially, the implementation of this project was entrusted to Krupp, which at that time was already working on placing 88-mm guns on the chassis of the PzKpfw IV tank. MAN, the manufacturer of the Panther, announced that the first chassis of the new tank would be shipped no earlier than January 1943. Therefore, in the fall, work was carried out using life-size and 1:10 scale models. Krupp determined that the Panther chassis needed some work to carry a powerful weapon, combined with good armor protection, and announced that the preparatory work would be completed by January 1943. November 10, 1942, was made a wooden model.
