The Circus Maximus was the largest of Ancient Romes sporting stadiums. It was reportedly able to hold over 250,000 spectators. The Circus Maximus had many incarnations. It was originally built out of wood in 329 BC and was rebuilt and modified over several centuries.
It was used primarily for chariot racing ... with the last race held in 549 AD.
