A gun is a type of artillery gun, the main purpose of which is to shoot at a flat trajectory, as well as at airborne and remote targets. From other representatives of the barrel artillery, such as a howitzer or mortar, the gun differs by a greater elongation of the barrel, the initial velocity of the projectile and long range, but it has a smaller maximum angle of elevation. The relative boundary between a howitzer and a cannon barrel is its length. With a barrel length of less than 40 calibers, the weapon is classified as a howitzer gun; with more – like a gun. This classification was adopted for modern guns, in the era of smooth-bore artillery, it was different: there were guns with a barrel length of less than 20 calibers.

Fire from cannons can be fought both from closed positions on targets unobservable from the firing position (enemy artillery batteries, columns of his troops on the march and in concentration points, populated areas), and direct fire on tanks, ships, fortifications of the enemy.

In the first half of the 14th century, firearms were already used in England and Italy. According to the surviving reports of King Edward III’s Personal Wardrobe, the British army in the Battle of Crecy in 1346 had iron pitcher-shaped “ribald”, shooting arrows.

For the first time, it was possible to either destroy the stone fortifications with gunfire either by the French in 1374 or by the Burgundians in 1377. In 1382 Crazy Greta cannon appears.
