The first generation of the BMW 3 Series (E21) appeared in 1975 as a replacement for the two-door 1602. It included nine gasoline engines (the "four" 1.6-1.9 and the "six" 2.0-3.2) and a pair of turbodiesels (1.7 and 2.5). With them aggregated five or six-speed "mechanics" or four-or five-band "automatic machine".

The fourth-generation sedan (E46) was launched on the world market, excluding the United States, in 1998.
